Garlic - hardnecks

I was able to get in just a wee bit more garlic for this year ….

  • Leningrad Porcelain - Large bulbs of this hardy porcelain garlic, very similar to the Yugoslavian. Excited to try this one.

  • French Porcelain - Extra-Large bulbs only, no larges. Read about it below.

  • Yugoslavian Porcelain - Large bulbs available. Read about it below.

  • Purple Russian - a marbled Purple Stripe type, extra-large bulbs available. Read about it below.

  • Red Russian - As above with the purple. Large bulbs available. Read below for more information.

  • Persian Star - Large and Extra-Large available. A Purple Stripe type. A superior all-around garlic and favorite, this variety has a delectable flavor with a mild spice. Persian Star lends itself to baking, roasting or enjoying raw. Uncover the sleek white outer wrappers to reveal beautiful lilac-streaked clove skins.

Porcelain Type

Porcelains are big, beautiful looking hardneck garlics with satiny white wrappers. They keep well, have a strong flavour, and do well under a wide variety of growing conditions. They usually have 4 to 6 large cloves with reddish brown clove skins and they keep better, longer than most all other types in storage.

#1 Shuswap Delight A hardy Porcelain type that will grow well, keep well, and is lovely tasting. A burnished look to this lovely bulb. I grew this for the first time last year and loved it! It grew really well, nice and big, with pretty white wrappers.. the porcelains always do so well for us here on the island. And, I love the name.. a true BC garlic ; ) Averages 4 to 6 cloves per bulb and keeps for 6 to 8 months.

#2 French Porcelain I have been growing this French garlic for the past three years, and it has always proven to be really reliable, the very best producer of really great, good sized bulbs. Despite the past few winters being snowy, it has been the saving grace in my garlic bed. If the others are small, this one is big, if the others are big, these ones are always bigger. A beautiful bulb with nice, clean white papery skins and a strong garlic flavour. Super easy to grow, great for the beginner gardener. On average... 4 to 5 big cloves per bulb with good storage (6 to 8 months).

#3 Yugoslavian The best of the best. This one I have been growing for many, many years and it never disappoints ... not in rainy years and not in snowy ones. Always gives me great bulbs. One of the finest hardneck garlics on the market for BC growers. A staple garlic in my garden. On average.. 4 to 6 big cloves per bulb and a seriously good keeper at about 9 months.

#4 Northern Quebec A real favourite of mine that I was unable to get for a few years and am so happy to have it back. NQ can handle cold weather, snow, and wet feet better than most garlics. It has large cloves, is easy to peel, and is super yummy tasting. On average... 4 to 6 big cloves per bulbs and keeps well for 8 to 9 months.

Marbled Purple Stripe & Rocamboles

Marbled Purple Stripe hardneck garlic grows well everywhere… thrives in cold weather and also in warmer, wetter climates, like ours here on the island. It is pretty looking and great tasting. They are near always the largest of all the bulbs you will grow.

Rocamboles are considered by many as being the best tasting of all the garlics, gourmet garlic, they have a thin skin around the cloves so are easy to peel.

#5 Purple Russian (Marbled Purple Stripe) Like the Red Russians, these Purple ones are always the biggest and the bestest. The Russians will always be your biggest bulbs at harvest. This is another garlic that I have grown for the past two years now and it has always done well. The Russians taste great and grow so well here on the BC coast. They are big and beautiful and may even taste a little better than the Reds ;) On average... 6 huge cloves per huge bulb and keeps for 6 to 8 months.

#6 Red Russians (Marbled Purple Stripe) I was able to get my hands on some of the wonderful Red Russians, too. Both the Purple and the Red Russians will always be the biggest bulbs at harvest... I love them both! The Red Russian is the staple garlic for BC growers, always grows to a great size and a vigorous grower. On average … 6 to 8 huge cloves and huge bulbs, keeps for 6 to 8 months, too.

#7 Rocky Red (Marbled Purple Stripe) Just like the purple and the red Russians, this Rocky Red is going to be big and beautiful, easy to grow, very reliable. *I have very limited quantities of this variety. Marbled Purple Stripe has an average of 5 to 7 big, nice cloves. Easy-to-peel clove wrappers are a pleasure in the kitchen. These are our favourites for roasted garlic! Beautiful purple and chestnut clove wrappers, mottled purple bulb wrappers. Stores well for 6 to 8 months.

#8 Dan’s Italian (Rocambole) A strong garlic flavour with a warm sweet aftertaste. Rocamboles are considered to be the best tasting of all garlic varieties. Italian Red has thin skin covering the cloves, making it easy to peel. The flavor is rich and complex and lends itself to being used either raw or cooked. The Italian Red caramelizes well because of its high sugar content. On average 8 cloves per bulb, stores for 4 to 5 months. Rocambole is gourmet garlic, the chef’s preferred type. Does not like wet feet so make sure to have good draining soil

#9 Deep Purple Garlic - (Turban type garlic) NOT AVAILABLE - If you ordered this variety, you will be subbed with the beautiful SSEE (#10). Please let me know if this does not work for you. Tanja *Limited quantity of this lovely garlic. This garlic is just about the prettiest garlic you ever did see. It is a beautiful deep purple in colour just as it’s name states. Deep Purple is harvested early in the season, has a shorter growing season, so should be planted the latest of all your garlic. Do not plant till October at the earliest. Scapes can be left on or harvested, will not affect the size of the bulb. The scapes are less likely to get woody, so for those of you who love your scapes and big, lovely bulbs, too... this is the garlic for you. Earlier harvest, gorgeous bulbs, and great scapes to boot. ** Please note that earlier means harvest in mid to late June. On average... 8 cloves per bulb. Storage life is only about 4 to 5 months though, so use this one first and give as gifts to friends, who will be blown away by the beautiful colour and great flavour!

#10 Salt Spring Extra Early - (Turban type) *Limited quantity of this lovely garlic. This is not the same Salt Spring Garlic that you may be used to seeing. This one is a turban type of garlic, so will be ready earlier than any of the other varieties. Turbans are ready to go in mid June-ish. As they are so early, they should be planted last, a bit later than your other garlic. In our area, go with late October. This garlic is so early that you will have your garden bed back early enough to plant all kinds of summer veggies. Do not wait for it to turn brown half way up the stem or it may be too late, harvest as soon as you see browning happening. This garlic has gorgeous purple striped skins and hot spicy heat! Averages to 6 to 10 cloves per bulb.

On average... 10 to 14 cloves of varying sizes per bulb. Is a great storage garlic, lasts the longest of them all.

#12 Rose de Lautrec - (Creole type garlic) This very pretty pink garlic is very limited as it is a total trial here on the island. She tends to like drought and warm weather…. which is not exactly what we have here in winter. However, I am always willing to try something new, so… Rose comes from southern France and is not only the most beautiful pink garlic that you have ever seen, but is also sweet and buttery tasting. Averages 10 cloves per bulb with streaks of red, pink and purple. Stores well for 6 to 8 months.
